The Climate Data

Open data on climate, forests and land

The planet, in numbers.

Emissions, forests and energy for about 170 countries, from official scientific sources, with the latest data available (up to 2025). Every number has its source.

0
tonnes of CO₂ emitted worldwide
0
hectares of woodland lost (cut or burned)
0
hectares of old tropical forest lost

Estimates based on the latest annual averages: 2024 emissions (Global Carbon Project), trees lost in 2025 (Global Forest Watch). A hectare is a square of 100 by 100 metres.

From 1880 to today, in one row of colours.

Each stripe is a year. Its colour is the planet's average temperature compared with 1951–1980: blue cooler, red warmer. Hover over a stripe to read the year.

How we work

Open sources only

NASA, NOAA, Global Carbon Project, Global Forest Watch, FAO, World Bank, Ember, Energy Institute. Every chart says where its data come from and up to which year.

No invented numbers

Values are downloaded unchanged, only converted between units. When a figure is our own calculation, it says so next to it, with the method.

Correlation is not causation

The lab shows when two series move together and when they do not, and explains what science knows about the link between them.

Updated every month

An automated process checks the sources every month. When a new year is published, the charts update.

These pages were built with the help of an artificial intelligence assistant. Every page states its sources and how calculations are made, so that everything can be checked.
